Follow the steps to get passport without any pain :)
(1) Collect Bonafide certificate from academic section, main building. To get this, just go there with your I-Card, ask for bonafide application form. fill that form and submit it there. Most probabely they will ask you to come next day to collect your bonafide certificate.
(2)Collect residance proof from your hostel. Tell your hall-manager that you are applying for passport for that you need residance proof from hostel. He will tell you to write a application for that or he can give you a form to fill. (If you are a sophie and your hostel is different from freshie year then also collect residance proof from your previous hostel by same procedure)
(3)Birth certificate:
It seems a big problem as a lot of students do not have their birth certificate. I also don't have it. So if you are in the same condition what you can do is go to the sip & dine bar(not to drink:P) near that there is a advocate that makes affidavites. Tell him that you are a IITians and you need your birth affidavite.
(4)Get "bank statement" from canara bank & also sure that you have your bank passbook. Both will be required.
(5)Now goto the http://indianpassport.nic.in/ site and fillup online registration form and download that form at the end because you have to submit that form at the passport office. Submission date will start from 2 days after filling the application and will end after 15 days.
(6)Photos: You should have at least 12 photos.
(7)Fill that printed form, paste photo(s), sign on it.
